I first looked at ways to generate an income online back in the early 2000’s with eBay. I bought and sold on eBay, buying items from charity shops and selling them for a markup. This took a lot of time and effort so I started looking for another way of making money from eBay. I found an ebook about another eBay strategy which was based around finding bargains on eBay though using a miss-spelling tool like this one.
However, it was the downloadable ebook which caught my eye. I noticed the simplicity of this transaction – it was completely automated. I wondered whether I could replicate the same model selling my own ebook. So I wrote an ebook and built a website to sell it from. Sadly I didn’t sell any but it opened my eyes and I soon found an online course with the idea of learning how to get people to my website to sell my ebook.
Affiliate Marketing
The course I bought taught affiliate marketing – a strategy for selling other people’s products online. I realised that I could earn substantially more from selling the same course I had bought as an affiliate than I could by selling my own ebook! So I abandoned the eBook idea and started to learn affiliate marketing instead.
Affiliate marketing is a simple business model which allows anyone to earn through online referrals. I struggled for some time, dropping in and out of learning affiliate marketing. At first I didn’t make any money out of it, but I knew the potential of selling online was huge because of the automation involved. In particular, I liked the concept of selling digital products. A digital product didn’t need any manufacturing, handling or delivery costs. It was super simple!
The Unknown Stuntman
In my 20’s I met a stuntman who had worked on the James Bond films. I was super impressed as you might expect and so decided I wanted to become a stuntman myself. It took me four years to do all the required qualifications to join the British Stunt Register in the UK and it wasn’t until 6 years after meeting the stuntman (Martin) that I got my first paid job on a film called Enduring Love.
I thought I’d finally made it, after all the training and financial struggle to finally break through felt great. Sitting by my phone I waited eagerly in expectation of my next call! I waited, and waited. Sadly the phone didn’t ring that often and so it was back to my taxi job, office jobs, warehouse jobs and office jobs. Every now and then a job would come in though and I was super excited to be a working stuntman.
However this pattern continued for a long time and by my late 30’s I was pretty tired of filling in with crummy jobs which paid next to nothing. I was always broke and life always came second to stunt work. I had become trapped by the work I once desperately wanted.
A Blueprint For Success Online
I knew I needed another income stream since the stuntwork only came in sporadically and served to bail me out of debt each time. It wasn’t the life I wanted. So I continued looking to the internet as a means to earn an income.
By this time I had failed many times with earning a consistent income online. I had tried to learn Forex marketing, putting in 2 years of studying. But I’d only learned to lose money consistently with it. I had a few online sales from the affiliate marketing efforts, but it was nothing like a real income.
I came across a video of a guy on Facebook talking about online business systems. He seemed genuine and despite my growing scepticism of these “guru’s” selling their wares I knew I needed a solution. I was going nowhere fast doing nothing meant the next 10 years would be the same as the last.
So I bought yet another course, and decided to empty my “cup” and start again with the beginners mind. That was back in 2014.
Affiliate Coaching
Despite having the intention of bringing my “empty cup” with me, my lack of funds and my previous affiliate “experience” worked against me. I was still massively sceptical of anyone claiming the make their living from affiliate marketing but I joined a local get together and found a seminar in London which was run by the community I joined.
Finding other real people in this community gave me more confidence in it, but I still had my reservations. I also had a lot of limiting beliefs around money and this lack of confidence stopped me from taking the right actions for some time.
By joining coaching calls and listening to people who had already achieved success online, I was able to uncover some of my own limiting beliefs and gain more trust in what I was doing. Once I started making consistent online sales, my confidence grew and I was able to become more committed to the actions I was taking.
Coaching
I didn’t really consider coaching at first. I was more interested in learning affiliate marketing for myself so I could improve my financial situation. Through the coaching sessions I had with other affiliate coaches though, I learned the most about myself. I realised that I had a confidence issue and was consistently worried about spending money on my business. This kept me from achieving the results I really wanted for a long time.
Coaching also holds you accountable. I realised I was excusing myself far too often. Falling back into self destructive habits and not focusing on the most important things for my business to start working.
Through my own affiliate journey, I have learned so much about the inner struggles and outer struggles of becoming a successful affiliate marketer. I didn’t realise how important the inner work was. My poor self image, my self destructive habit patterns, circle of influence and poverty consciousness were all obstacles I had to overcome just to get clear on my intentions.
One of the best things you can do is to get very clear on what you want. Remove negative ideas which hold you back and remind yourself of your intentions every day.
