Why write a post on email marketing and the power of compounding? Well, something amazing just happened which inspired me to write this post! I just made an affiliate sale from someone who has been on my email list for 5 years! That’s the first time I’ve made a sale (that I’m aware of anyway) from someone who’s been on my email list for such a long time. I’ve had similar sales from people who had been subscribed for 2 years, but never 5!

Of course you shouldn’t have to wait 5 years to make a sale! But this just shows the power of building an email list and growing it over time. Most of the sales that come in are from new subscribers who have just opted in to my email list. But occasionally I’ll get someone who has been on the list for a while.

I remember when I started learning about affiliate marketing. I was so keen to make those sales. But I was also sceptical and had a very limited marketing budget. So much of my marketing was organic traffic through blogging. This is a very slow way of building your email list and paid marketing is much faster. But you don’t know what you don’t know and since I had the time but not the money, I chose blogging.

So my email list was built quite slowly and over time I came to see the power of compounding and how it works with a list. Many affiliates who had much larger marketing budgets overtook me on the “success” levels because they could build email lists very quickly with paid ads.

With paid ads you can quickly gather many leads. One affiliate I learned from was getting 300+ leads a day, although he had a huge marketing budget! So my paltry 1-10 leads a day looked rather pathetic compared to his! But I was a beginner and he was an expert with a large marketing budget!

What is also true is that when I made a sale, it was all profit (minus my time of course). Whereas if you’re spending money on marketing you have to weigh your sales against your expenditure.

Email Marketing And The Power Of Compounding – Don’t Quit!

Most affiliates will quit before they have even reached 1000 emails on their list, according to one of my mentors. They don’t get sales and so assume they never will and that “it” doesn’t work. Even if you got lucky as a beginner and dropped an early sale, this may well be a fluke which leads to disappointment later!

This is a shame, because once you learn how to build an email list, the skill is with you for life. Unfortunately, consistent results don’t come straight away and this is for a number of reasons:

  • Smaller numbers means less sales (obviously)
  • As a beginner, you may not have your targeting quite right yet
  • Your messaging might not sync with your advertising
  • You haven’t yet established a marketing strategy which gives you leads consistently

As you grow in your ability to understand what you’re doing as an affiliate all these things change! Your email list grows naturally as you continue to keep going and stay the course. But three other things happen if you commit to growing your knowledge. You become better with targeting the right audience and speaking congruently according to the needs of your audience. You also find a way to consistently gather targeted leads and in greater numbers.

Email Marketing And Compounding – The Parabolic Curve

The straight line is what most affiliate beginners will expect – results according to work put in. But because the work initially as an affiliate is that of learning and implementing new strategies (which you perhaps don’t fully understand) your results don’t yet show up! This is why so many affiliates will quit. They’ve maybe put in weeks or even months of learning and implementing their knowledge and yet have only meagre results (if any).

But once these things change, results can go parabolic very quickly:

  • List numbers grow beyond 1000, and continue to grow
  • A marketing strategy has been learned which works to consistently grow and even scale the numbers on their list into 5 and 6 figure lists
  • The customer avatar is now understood – targeting the right audience for your product
  • Messaging is congruent with the advertising campaign (and the needs of your audience) to speak in a congruent way

Summary

Email marketing can be life changing because it offers you the ability to collect leads and deliver products in a completely automated way! But there’s work involved in understanding the needs of your customer and delivering the right product/s to the right audience.

Once this is understood in both a technical sense (gathering of leads, targeting audience with advertising) and from a larger perspective (growing the list to tens of thousands), you can build a business which requires very little input personally.

Automation can take over once everything is in place and you can run a marketing campaign which is profitable. In the beginning there is a lot to learn and there’s mistakes which can be made too. This is why it’s useful to use a step by step business system which is already set up with products in place and email templates ready to use.
